1. On average 37% of the cereals produced in the world were used for animal feed

2. Recent research has shown that about 27% of the water footprint of humanity is related to the production of animal products (Mekonnen and Hoekstra, 2011)

3. Only 4% of the water footprint of humanity relates to water use at home.

Today the meat and dairy industry is harming more people than it is helping - it is an incredibly pollutive industry and it affects the population’s health in a negative way. The detrimental effects of this industry is not made clear to the public for various reasons - possibly because it is a revenue generating industry within communities, and our governments are not ready to address this problem because of it.

The public therefore needs to be made aware of this situation so that we can vote with our dollar. Ultimately the goal is not to shut down these industries, but replace them with more sustainable industries. If we can achieve this we will have both a cleaner planet and less health problems in general. Two of the world's largest problems right now can be considerably lessened, which is why this is Green Eye’s major focus; it is information we will be disseminating time and time again to foster the movement toward a more sustainable way of eating.

The plant-based lifestyle is therefore not just a fad for teen girls, but a necessity. We need to begin questioning what we eat, taking into account its carbon and water footprint, and we need to vote with our dollar in order to shift the focus of food industries. Once people begin buying more plant-based foods and less animal products, generators of these products will have no choice but to supply what the community demands.

We need reform in virtually every governmental sector in order to achieve this vision. We need our children to be educated about the plant-based lifestyle, which means we need to generate research interest into this lifestyle. Companies will begin researching the nutritional and health oriented benefits of the plant-based lifestyle as it becomes more popular - and it will become more popular as more people...

a) find out about this lifestyle

b) apply this lifestyle by virtue of buying more plant-based food as substitutes of animal products

The community might not be willing to do this because they believe that...

a) this diet doesn't taste good

b) this diet doesn't fulfil nutritional requirements

c) this diet is expensive

addressing a) This diet can taste good - check out FullyRawKristina on YouTube

addressing b) This diet is actually more nutritional than the average diet if you eat this diet conscious of the nutrients that are found in basic herbs, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds.

addressing c) The plant-based diet is cheaper than one where animal products are consumed, otherwise third world countries would not be eating predominantly plant-based foods. Also the expensive plant-based products you find in the 'health food' aisle will become cheaper as the community demands more of these products, as they will be manufactured in bulk.

If you are still not convinced that the world needs to transition to a plant-based lifestyle, then check out these shocking statistics:
